Welcome to Legnaro National Laboratories (LNL)

lnl flagsLNL is one of the four national labs of the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN). The mission is to perform basic research in nuclear physics and nuclear-astrophysics, together with applications of nuclear technologies.

Around 700 scientists from all over the world are involved in the ongoing research programs. Every day about 250 people work at LNL, half of them being INFN employees (physicists, engineers, technicians....) the remaining half coming from universities and research institutions in Italy and abroad. The laboratory budget is nearly 20 Million Euro per year, half for handling and research, half for personnel. Strength points are the development of particle accelerators and of nuclear radiation detectors, and the technology transfer.

INFN LNL new director

Fabiana Gramegna is a research manager at the INFN National Laboratories of Legnaro. Before the role of director, she was the head of the Research Division and deputy manager, as scientific coordinator, of the SPES Project, the construction of a research infrastructure for exotic beams of interest for nuclear physics and its applications. She is an experimental nuclear physicist: her studies are mainly related to nuclear reactions between heavy ions at low and intermediate energies. After graduating in physics at the University of Padua in 1979, she carried out research at the National Laboratories of Legnaro (LNL) and South (LNS) of the INFN and at various international laboratories including GANIL (France), NSCL-MSU (USA), Texas A&M (USA), ORNL (USA) and CERN. She has been National Manager of nuclear physics activities belonging to the National Scientific Commission 3, including STREGA and NUCL-EX, for the study of nuclear dynamics and thermodynamics with stable and exotic beams. She coordinated the construction of the GARFIELD detector: a 4π spectrometer for the measurement of charged particles and fragments and collaborated in the study and construction of complex detectors for particles, such as MULTICS and FAZIA.

In the context of National Scientific Commission 5, she promoted the development of new generation neutron detectors for research and applications. She collaborates and promotes the development of new instrumentation for experimentation with exotic beams at SPES. She is the scientific coordinator of the international agreements LIA - COLLAGAIN and POLITA for European Laboratories associated, respectively, between Italy and France and Italy and Poland, and she is referent for training activities within the agreement between INFN and the iThemba Laboratory (South Africa).
